Gulf Arabs to Finance Syrian Op?September 4, 2013
Secretary of State Kerry told the US Senate today that the Gulf Arab states were willing to fully finance any US operation against the Assad regime in Syria.
Has it really come to this? The US is a bankrupt superpower, pimping out its still mighty military force as mercenaries to wealthy commercial interests? And the supposedly anti-war Secretary of State trumpeting this as a feature?
Tom Ricks famously called the Iraqi occupation a Fiasco; he hadn’t seen nothin’ yet. What similar word could possibly describe the gruesome clownshow we are witnessing now?. The last 12 years have taught us two important lessons: (1) The US military can topple any government in the CAMENA region, but (2) sometimes the devil you know really is better than the devil you don’t.
The follow-ons to the successful regime
changes decapitations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya have been at best failures, at worst utter disasters. Libya has now descended into chaos and lawlessness; we have long known that Qaddafi’s armory has been looted and dispersed to every militant organization in the region. Can you imagine the scenario that looms in Syria, with Hezbollah and al Qaeda fighting over control of Assad’s chemical arsenal? It seems that the continued existence of the Soviet-style Baathist dictator is the best possible outcome at this point.
