Russia plans new string of Arctic naval bases

A warming climate has opened the Arctic Ocean up to seasonal shipping over the past few summers.  Although the amount of commercial traffic traversing the Northern Sea Route and the Northwest Passage is still tiny, the opening of these sea lanes would represent a revolutionary change in geostrategic thinking.  Arctic nations Canada, Norway and Denmark have all announced their intentions to build bases on their territory as well, but nothing of the scope of the planned Russian efforts, which are detailed by Mark Adomanis at the US Naval Institute blog.  Read the whole thing.
