French/Irish collaboration on large tidal energy farm moves forward

French energy company EDF is teaming with Irish turbine designer OpenHydro on the world’s largest tidal energy farm, which will ultimately consist of 4 large turbines, the first of which is in preparation for installation.  Tidal energy systems utilize turbines beneath the sea’s surface to harness the constant water flow and turn it into electricity.  Tidal power is, conceivably, a virtually inexhaustible source of energy.  The enemy of tidal power, however, is the medium in which it is found:  seawater is the scourge of mechanical equipment, and maintenance costs often prove to be prohibitive.
