Fraying alliances; the US in global retreat

The global system that the United States has built to ensure its position in the post World War Two and post Cold War periods is coming apart.  Reports from around the globe are of old allies and alliance structures fraying and falling away:

Early last month, I linked to a Michael Young column from Lebanon asking if we are witnessing the end of the American era in the Middle East.   Perhaps that question only scratches the surface.  It is hard to believe that just 3 years ago, the US was the dominant power in the Middle East and Central Asia.  Today, the US is clearly the “weak horse” in the region.  How the mighty have fallen.  As bad as we thought things were during the Bush reign, America was still perceived as the strong horse.    That perception is gone.
